The Central, East & West Africa (CEWA) Division is responsible for handling bilateral relations between Malawi and countries in the Central, East and West African regions. It handles thirty four (34) countries mostly located South of the Sahara belonging to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Economic Community of Central African States, East African Community and some from the SADC (Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), minus, Zambia, Egypt, Djibouti and Comoros. The Division is also responsible for multilateral Organisations based in the region to which Malawi is a party, namely, COMESA, the Tripartite Forum of SADC, COMESA and East Africa and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) whose Secretariat is based in Ghana. The Division is also handling multilateral affairs from United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa, and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and United Nations Habitat based in Nairobi, Kenya. The Africa & Middle East Directorate manages Malawi’s relations with countries and intergovernmental bodies based in Africa and the Middle East. It coordinates the implementation of the Malawi Foreign Policy and the Diaspora Engagement Policy which aim at maximizing Malawi national interest in the region. Malawi has a total of eight (8) Diplomatic Missions in Africa namely: Mozambique; Zambia; Tanzania; Zimbabwe; South Africa; Kenya; Ethiopia; and Egypt and it hosts residential missions of seven (7) African countries namely: Egypt, South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria. In the Middle East, Malawi has an embassy in Kuwait and a consulate in Dubai. Malawi also hosts representative offices of some regional and continental organisations such as the AU, COMESA and Africa Development Bank.
Malawi High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania The Malawi High Commission in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, mainly facilitates strategic trade; transportation (transit) route; and political, consular, and cultural cooperation. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Burundi, Comoros, Rwanda, and Seychelles on a non-residential basis.
Malawi High Commission in Maputo and Malawi Consulate in Tete, Mozambique The Malawi High Commission in Maputo, and the Malawi Consulate in Tete, Mozambique, mainly facilitate strategic trade; transportation (transit) route; political, consular, and cultural cooperation; defence and security cooperation. The Mission in Maputo also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Swaziland and Madagascar on a non-residential basis.
Malawi High Commission in Lusaka, Zambia The Malawi High Commission in Lusaka, Zambia, mainly facilitates trade; political, consular, and cultural cooperation; and defence and security cooperation. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Angola, Congo - Brazzaville, and DRC on a non-residential basis, and coordinates Malawi’s integration efforts under the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Malawi High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya The Malawi High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, mainly facilitates trade; political and consularcooperation; and Malawi’s multilateral diplomacy at the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), and UN Habitat which are hosted in Kenya. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Central African Republic, Eritrea, Israel, Somalia, and Uganda on a non-residential basis.
Malawi Embassy in Cairo, Egypt The Malawi Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, facilitates trade, investment, political and technical cooperation between Malawi and Egypt. As the main gateway to the Arab World, the Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Algeria, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia on a non-residential basis.
Malawi Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe The Malawi Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, mainly facilitates trade, consular and political cooperation. It also supports the strategic transit route to South Africa and surrounding countries as well as Malawi’s access to Zimbabwe’s air connectivity. Consular work that the Embassy performs is particularly important due to the large Malawian Diaspora that has settled in Zimbabwe.
Malawi High Commission in Pretoria, and Malawi Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa The Malawi High Commission in Pretoria, and the Malawi Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa, facilitate strategic trade; strategic transportation (transit) route; political, economic and social cooperation; and consular matters. The Mission’s consular service in South Africa is particularly important in view of the large Malawian Diaspora that has settled in that country. The High Commission also facilitates Malawi’s participation in activities of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, and Namibia on a non-residential basis.
Malawi Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia The Malawi Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, facilitates Malawi’s participation in multilateral diplomacy in the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The Mission is also accredited to the Federal Republic of Ethiopia. Furthermore, the Mission serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritanian, Niger, Nigeria, Saharawi Arab Republic, Sierra Leone, Senegal, South Sudan, and Togo on a non-residential basis.
Malawi Consulate in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) The Malawi Consulate in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), mainly facilitates development cooperation (financing), trade and consular matters.
Malawi Embassy in Kuwait City, Kuwait The Malawi Embassy in Kuwait City, Kuwait, mainly facilitates development cooperation (financing) and consular matters. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Bahrain, Iraq, Omar, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen on a non-residential basis.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the link between the Government of the Republic of Malawi and the International Community. It is responsible for formulating, implementing and monitoring the Malawi Foreign Policy and the Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy. The Foreign Policy is a codification of the guidelines, principles and norms that assist Malawi to relate with other states or bodies in the international, political and economic systems in order for the country to achieve its development goals and further its national interests. The Malawi Diaspora Engagement Policy seeks to harness the potential of the Malawians living in foreign countries to maintain links with their home country with the ultimate aim of contributing to Malawi's socio-economic development. In performing its mandate, the Ministry works in close liaison with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies that are responsible for the implementation of various international commitment that Malawi has undertaken. The Ministry has six directorates namely Africa & Middle East; Americas; Asia, Australia and Pacific; Europe; Protocol; and Management. The Management directorate is composed of the following divisions: Human Resource Management & Development; Internal Finance; Procurement, Legal Affairs; Internal Audit; Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation; and Information & Communication Technology. The Ministry has twenty one Malawi Missions located in Africa; South & North America; Asia; and Europe. These Malawi Missions include Malawi Embassies, High Commissions, Malawi Consuls General, Malawi Permanent Missions and Honorary Consuls. |
