Malawi - Vatican Relations




Malawi and the Vatican have enjoyed cordial relations for many years. The highlights of these relations include the visit to Malawi in 1989, of  Pope John Paul II; and the visit to the Vatican by Malawi’s former President, Bakili Muluzi and Later President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Malawi - United Kingdom




Malawi and Britain share a long history dating as far back as the 1800s when the British Missionaries came to Malawi.  For 73 years from 1891 to 1964, Nyasaland (Malawi) was a British Protectorate.

Upon her independence in 1964, Malawi and Britain established diplomatic relations, and Malawi also became a member of the Commonwealth.  The relations have been cordial from the beginning, as characterized by exchange of State Visits by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who visited Malawi in July, 1979 and His Excellency Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda who reciprocated the visit to Britain in April, 1985. 



To date, relations between the two countries remain cordial

Malawi - Finland Relations






Malawi established diplomatic relations with Finland on non residential basis in 1986. The Malawian Ambassador accredited to London, UK, is also accredited to Finland, while the Finish Ambassador to Lusaka, Zambia, is also accredited to Lilongwe.



The two countries have been cooperating in economic and technical support sectors, especially through the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the African Union (AU) in areas of forestry and fisheries.

Malawi - Switzerland







Switzerland and Malawi maintain diplomatic relations with each other on non-residential basis.  Malawi’s Embassy in Brussels is accredited to Switzerland. The Embassy of Switzerland in Harare is accredited to Malawi.

Malawi - Germany Relations




Relations between Malawi and Germany date back to the 1960s.



Germany has over the years assisted Malawi by providing funding in various areas ranging from primary education; rural health facilities; family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention; micro, small, and medium scale enterprise promotion; animal health; horticulture; and consolidation of democracy.

Since 2007, Germany has, in coordination with other donors, aligned its assistance to the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy in education; health; and democratic decentralization.
