EUROPE DIRECTORATE

The Directorate of Europe is responsible for promoting bilateral and multilateral relations between Malawi and the European Community through monitoring and analyzing political and economic developments, with a view to advising Government on their implications on Malawi and the international scene. The Directorate’s objective is to ensure that Malawi maintains sound relations with European countries and international organizations based in Europe as a framework for advancing the country’s national interests. The Directorate comprises two Divisions: Bilateral Affairs and Multilateral Affairs.

 

BILATERAL AFFAIRS DIVISION

The Bilateral Affairs Division is responsible for promoting political and economic relations with individual countries in Europe. This is done through monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on international political and economic developments, and through direct engagement through Malawi’s Diplomatic Missions in Europe. Europe has some of Malawi’s major traditional partners which include: the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, Norway and Belgium, among others. The European Union is also Malawi’s major multilateral partner. The Directorate engages with Malawi Missions based in Europe and European Diplomatic Missions in Malawi.  Malawi has four Missions in Europe namely; London, Brussels, Berlin and Geneva while six European Missions are resident in Malawi namely: Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Iceland and the European Union Delegation. The division also manages structured interactions with EU member states under such arrangements as the Malawi/EU political dialogue, the UK/Africa Investment Summits and the Russia/Africa Summits. The Directorate also manages affairs of Malawians resident in Europe and facilitates their contribution towards Malawi’s development.

 

MULTILATERAL AFFAIRS DIVISION

The Multilateral Affairs Division is responsible for Malawi’s relations with intergovernmental organizations based in Europe, and the promotion of the global disarmament and non-proliferation agenda. Some of the Europe-based international organizations include; The Commonwealth; Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; the World Trade Organization (WTO); the Organisation of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS); the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); European Union (EU); the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); the Global Forum for Migration and Development (GFMD), among others. The Division is also managing Malawi’s tenure as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (2021-2023) through our mission in Geneva.  The Division also supported Malawi’s participation at the UNFCCC CoP26 which took place in Glasgow, Scotland. The Division also coordinates Malawi’s disarmament and non-proliferation activities which are in line with the global agenda. It collaborates with international institutions such as the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW); the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC); the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centers of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE), among others.

 

Malawi Embassy in Berlin, Germany

The Malawi Embassy in Berlin, Germany, facilitates development, trade, investment, and tourism cooperation; and cultural relations. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, The Holy See, Hungary, Kosovo, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Turkey, and Ukraine on a non-residential basis.

 

Malawi High Commission in London, UK

The Malawi High Commission in London, UK, facilitates development cooperation; trade, investment and tourism cooperation; training; and consular matters. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden on a non-residential basis. It also facilitates Malawi’s participation in multilateral diplomacy in the Commonwealth.

 

Malawi Embassy in Brussels, Belgium

The Malawi Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, mainly facilitates multilateral diplomacy in the context of the European Union (EU), the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation(UNESCO). The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Andorra, France, Italy, Luxemburg, Monaco, and the Netherlands on a non-residential basis.

 

Malawi Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland

The Malawi Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland, mainly facilitates Malawi’s multilateral diplomacy in the context of the following organisations: UN, ILO, IOM, ITU, UNCTAD, UNHCR, WEF, WHO, WMO, WTO. The Mission also serves as a base for Malawi’s management of bilateral relations with Cyprus on a non-residential basis.
