Malawi - China Relations

 

 

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Malawi established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China on 28 December, 2007. Beijing officially opened its Lilongwe Embassy in January 2008, whereas Lilongwe opened its Beijing Embassy in March, 2008.

 

COOPERATION WITH MALAWI

The diplomatic relations between Lilongwe and Beijing focus on several areas of cooperation, these include the economy, trade, education, human resources, culture health, sports and media, and infrastructure development. 

 

Malawi - Australia Relations

 

 

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Malawi and Australia established diplomatic relations on a non-residential basis in 1981.  Even before the establishment of the formal diplomatic relations, Malawi received technical assistance in the form of training and development aid from Australia through AUSAID programmes. 

 

COOPERATION WITH MALAWI

Malawi has benefited from Australian development assistance since the attainment of independence in 1964.

 

Malawi - South Korea Relations

 

 

 

 

 

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1965.

 

COOPERATION WITH MALAWI

Since the two countries established diplomatic relations, Malawi has benefited tremendously from KOICA’s assistance in the sectors of health, agriculture, capacity building and the provision of equipment, ranging from computers to motor vehicles.

Malawi has cooperated with South Korea at the United Nations.

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Formal diplomatic relations between Malawi and Thailand were established in 1987.

 

COOPERATION WITH MALAWI

Malawi and Thailand cooperate in sectors such as agriculture, health and education. In recent years, the Thai government has been providing fellowships to Malawi and focus has been in the health and water management sectors.

COOPERATION WITH MALAWI

Malawi has benefited from Malaysia in areas of communications, infrastructure development and technical assistance, particularly in the agricultural field.

In September 1996 two agreements on Promotion of bilateral Trade and Investment were signed between the Governments of Malawi and Malaysia.  Following the signing of these agreements, the Malawi Chamber of Commerce signed three Memoranda of Understanding with three Malaysian business entities on investment in financial services, insurance and mineral exploitation at the 2nd Langkawi International Dialogue “SMART Partnership for Global Prosperity” which took place in November 1996.

 

On 11th February 2000 the Governments of Malawi and Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Technical Cooperation in Agriculture.   This memorandum outlined bilateral cooperation in the following areas of mutual interest: development and improvement in agriculture through exchange of seeds, breeds, species, experts, training; and transfer of technology.
