Honourable Agnes Nyalonje, Minister of Labour of the Republic of Malawi, welcoming, on behalf of His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, the first group of 41 Malawian evacuees from the Sudanese conflict, at the Kamuzu International Airport, on 12th May, 2023. In her remarks, she applauded the Malawians, most of whom were students, for their courage and foresight in supporting each other to flee from the fighting. On behalf of His Excellency the President, she expressed gratitude that no Malawian life had been lost in the conflict. She also thanked His Excellency the President for directing the Malawi Government to evacuate the Malawians as a matter of urgency.
Speaking earlier, Mr. Maulana Monjeza, Deputy Secretary General of the Moslem Association of Malawi, thanked His Excellency the President for directing that the Government should support the evacuation of the Malawians in Sudan.
Speaking at the reception, Mr. Kassam Okhai, Chairman of the Islamic Zakaat Fund (IZF) thanked the Malawi Government for evacuating the stranded Malawians in Sudan. IZF, which sponsors Malawians to pursue higher education both locally and internationally, sponsored most of the students in Sudan.
To date, the Malawi Government has been monitoring the evacuation of 95 Malawian individuals and families from Sudan. The Government was directly involved in evacuating 82 Malawians who utilised Ethiopia as their safe passage. The second group of 41 Malawians arrived in the country on 14th May, 2023. Both groups were transported by a Malawi Defence Force aeroplane.
